Firefly are a bit of a Notts institution for followers of all things tech and between the various venues, whether the Garvey, the Bomb or Stealth, they have put on some fine names of note in previous sessions such as Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke and the like. Not to disappoint then Terry Francis was up from his usual Fabric haunt to serve up some choice cuts for us Notts folk.Firefly have had a bit of a makeover to usher in their new season, things have got comfy with a liberal spread of rugs, bean bags and candles. This intimate feel continues with drapes and netting breaking down the space into smaller areas, the main room is now downstairs, complete with podiums, and upstairs is now sporting an obscenely big sound system playing dub, whoa there Nelly! I like a bit of dub but when the tower block sized soundsystem hoved into view, and the bass started to vibrate the metalwork in my clothes, I knew there was some serious selecta beats in
store. Dis dub be good, but is it really necessary to have a soundsystem this big cranked up in an upstairs indoor room? remember weapons are banned by the Geneva convention. The bass was so loud that everything was resonating, my teeth, the bar, the floor...Downstairs was good, the tech, electro and occasional breaks on offer was just the ticket for a night of energetic mayhem, which is exactly what I witnessed as the club filled up. Terry Francis failed to disappoint, his prime time set being an example of why he is so popular, capturing the mood of the crowd with seamless mixing of driving, bass heavy, tech house. Overall the night was good, the new look makes the place more comfortable and the music certainly won’t disappoint, lets just hope the upstairs soundsystem doesn't take off the roof.
