6 June 2006 - For immediate release:
Three LeftLions in your beer
A Sherwood-born brewer has teamed up with Nottingham entrepreneurs LeftLion to create World Cup real ale for Nottingham punters to sup.
The beer, a 4.7% pale ale made with Maris Otter malt and Willamette hops, is named Three LeftLions in honour of the England football badge and the famous Nottingham meeting point.
A refreshing summer beer with a fruity aftertaste, pale in colour and full of flavour, it is made to a similar recipe to the Great British beer festival 2004 Supreme champion beer Pale Rider. It's been developed with a reduced abv (alcohol by volume) so you can have a few more whilst watching the football.
The beer was created by Sherwood-born Dominic Flynn, 25, who now works for Kelham Island brewery in Yorkshire. Dominic said: "I have known the founders of LeftLion through going to school and football matches together and I wanted to brew a beer just for them. This seemed like a good occasion."
"Whilst studying in Sheffield I worked in a pub owned by the brewery owner. The head brewer and I got on well and had similar views on beer. He offered me a couple of hours work digging the mash tun, cleaning casks and any other dirty job he could think of! My job as a Second Brewer developed from there."
The Kelham Island brewery supply beers to all Tynemill brewery pubs in Nottingham including: The Forest Tavern, The Maze, The Orange Tree, Hotel Deux, Sir Charles Napier and The Chestnut tree (among many others). You can expect to be able to order a pint of in these pubs during and after the world cup. It is also hoped the beer will make an appearance at the Nottingham beer festival and tour the festival circuit with CAMRA during the summer.
The ale will make its Notts debut during the LeftLion World Cup Extravaganza at The Maze. This great pub, once a training ground for notorious boxer Bendigo, is being taken over by LeftLion for the world cup with some great local entertainment on offer. You can watch every England game with musical acts after the footy, a pub quiz before and some classic world cup games re-run on the big screen. Football thugs, knuckle draggers and mouth breathers will be refused entry. Nice people will be fine. Entry is free. T-shirts with Three LeftLions logo on will be available to buy at the event and online from www.leftlion.co.uk/worldcup
LeftLion Editor and Founder Jared Wilson said: "Most of our team like drinking beer and it will be a real pleasure to sup a pint of LeftLion ale while watching England in the World Cup. Come on England!"
Kelham Island brewery are also brewing a beer in honour of Bobby Moore called Bobby's Tackle. This is brewed using lager malt and Cech hops (similar ingredients to a bohemian lager, but brewed using traditional British techniques). Kelham Island are donating a portion of profits to a testicular cancer charity in respect to the late world cup winning captain.
