Click here for a full gallery from the Marathon The Robin Hood Marathon has been running since 1981 and originally started and finished in the market square, but the popularity of the race (and the fact that at the moment, it would be pretty hard to start anything there) meant that it moved out to Victoria Embankment, where it starts and finishes today. Each year the number of participants grows and last Sunday, almost 8,000 people finished either the half or full marathon. In fact the race is actually the second biggest full marathon in the UK and the third largest road race.Once again, the event managed to generate a lot of community spirit and even if you weren’t running, you could help by marshalling, handing out water to the runners, or helping out at the race enclosure. Experian have sponsored the race for the last eight years, its official title is the Experian Robin Hood Marathon, and the locally based company turn out in force with volunteers to help run the day. A lot of the people of Nottingham come out on to the streets to clap along the runners and then realise that they can’t complain about their hands hurting, as the people in front of them are running 26 miles. The winners of the race make some money, but for the other 7,997 people who run, the reward of completing it is enough and shedloads of money is raised for charity. If you didn't make it out of bed this year before118,000 collective miles were run, it's definately worth a trip next year. Marathon photo gallery Robin Hood Marathon website Comment (4) Socialise
