It was a night of the Nottingham Superstar DJs at The Orange Tree for April’s LeftLion Presents. With so much going off on Saturday it was just what the doctor ordered to get everybody in the mood. We were treated to six of the best with sets Alex Traska, Beane, Not to be outdone, Matlock’s biggest export, Rhythm Plate, headlined for Basement Boogaloo up the road at The Maze. With numerous releases under their belt, BBC airplay, an inclusion on the latest Renaissance album and keeping it local with a remix on the Myhouse-Yourhouse label they’re quite used to putting it about. Perfectly timed for the Orange Tree close they took to the decks just after midnight. Taking no prisoners they kicked their set off with Mike Monday’s Zum Zum, setting a high standard for what was to come.
The dancefloor was filled almost immediately after Rhythm Plate stepped up. One punter literally danced her shoes off, braving the night with bare feet. Dropping some of their own tracks into the set, including Silence is… and Rush On Me, there was a heady mix of funk, classic and deep house meaning that bass ruled supreme. After almost four hours of crowd pleasing tunes by the likes of Trackheadz, Roland Appel and 95 North they finished the night with their own “soon to be piano anthem” (watch this space kids…) Not Like That. The snow was indeed a welcome friend to cool off in on the walk home. Taking a short respite from The Maze, Basement Boogaloo are not going AWOL.
