Polymath Live Extravaganza, Nottingham Arts Theatre, Saturday May 3

Polymath are a sonic melting pot brimming over with invention, and the next step for a quartet of musicians who have served time in some of Nottingham’s best-loved bands. Formed last summer as a collaboration between Tom Walsh (vocals, Dead City Presidents) and Amy Nicholson (cellist, The Hellset Orchestra), the collective expanded with the addition of Alistair Harris (guitarist, Goodbye Motor Skills!) and Mike Holt (drums, Vero), and a self-titled EP followed at the end of ’07.

Polymath’s coming-out party is scheduled for Saturday May 3 at the Nottingham Arts Theatre, and promises to be a literal interpolation of their name – ‘a master of many disciplines’. A multi-disciplined beast of an evening, encompassing contemporary dance, performance, video, animation and live bands, it should be a little more substantial than your average gig.

Attractions include;

Vonnegut’s Girls: two contemporary dancers who have devised a dance piece to set rules, including rules for the band to create the music for the piece, inspired by John Cage.

Mischief Makers: live performance collective whose emphasis is on environmental issues and activism.

Lateral Lines: an animator and fine artist who has been commissioned by the band to create an animation for one of the band’s tracks.

The Dust Collectors: Nottingham Psychedelic/Jazz/Industrial band, playing support.

Tickets are available at the Polymath website.
