Surface Gallery at the Nottingham Voluntary Action Centre on Mansfield Road is looking to relocate. Over the past nine years many passionate volunteers have run Surface Gallery. It has been a platform for students and emerging artists to exhibit in a professional space, as well as, attracting international and established artists who also regularly exhibit at the ICA and Royal Academy London. NVAC have given the gallery six weeks to exit the premises, Liz Hoyle from the gallery explains “We were shocked on receiving our eviction notice. But we see this as an exciting opportunity; the gallery has proven itself over the past nine years and our staff have taken a positive stance and are prepared for the challenges ahead. I have been really touched by all the messages of support we have already received.” Surface Gallery is an independent, non-for-profit organisation started by students from Nottingham Trent University, and has developed strong relationships with artist groups and Universities across the East Midlands. The gallery is now looking for new premises and invites any suggestions for its exciting future. The galleries last exhibition ‘Open Show’ at the NVAC building will coincide with an awareness function in order to give the friends of Surface Gallery an opportunity to take part in the planning of their future. This will be held in the gallery on Friday 29 August 6pm until 8pm. Equally, a fundraiser and celebration party of the history of the gallery at NVAC will be held at a later date, and will be advertised on the website.
