LeftLion are pleased to announce a new live music residency at Brownes bar in Hockley beginning with our fifth birthday bash on Friday 19 September 2008. Taking place on the third Friday of each month after, LeftLion will be showcasing the best offerings from Nottingham’s live music scene from the Hockley venue, right in the centre of town and about 300metres from the statue in the Market Square we are named after. Brownes has recently been bought out and re-opened by the people behind the Detonate and Spectrum events. The 370 capacity venue first started trading in 1989 as a wine bar, and has a long established reputation as one of the most popular establishments in Nottingham. LeftLion co-founder Jared Wilson said: “After three successful years at the Orange Tree as well as several years doing events at the Malt Cross, we think that a change of venue will bring a breath of fresh air to our flagship live music nights. We’re excited about this new partnership and so are the bands and acts we have lined up for it.” The first event will also coincide with LeftLion’s fifth birthday (we originally launched this website in September 2003), so you can expect birthday fun and frolics and perhaps even a bit of free cake.
The acts on the opening night will be Lone and Vinyl [Abort]. Lone, formerly half of Kids In Tracksuits, has recently released his debut album Lemurian on Dealmaker Records – and it’s already become the fastest-selling album the label has produced. Vinyl [Abort] are a collective of local DJs, MCs and VJs who mash-up hiphop, drum and bass and dubstep, to create some seriously funky party tunes. They’ve got the beats to drive the crowds wild and are thoroughly nice chaps too. Acts on our nights will also be joined by our resident DJs The Stiff Kittens, who have just returned from a successful tour of Los Angeles. The tag team of Sonia and Kate have become familiar faces around the Nottingham music scene and highly respected for their skills on the ones and twos. The nights will be free entry (you know we’re too good to you) but there will be a donation bucket on hand, where we will collect money for charities local and national. First up the charity will be the Family Care Foundation.
