| Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust Fundraising Bike Ride - Paris to Nottingham |
Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor Jon Collins and colleagues are seeking the support of Nottingham folk once more, for a major fundraising event.
Few people in Nottingham will forget the tragic events of a few years ago when 14 year old Danielle Beccan was tragically killed, as the innocent bystander of a drive-by shooting which marked the worst times of Nottingham’s recent history. Since then The Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust, a charity set up after her death to fund community activities, has raised over £130,000 to fund a Dance Studio and dance activity (Danielle’s favourite past time) and now wants to complete its fundraising in spectacular style. So the cycling “team” has agreed to attempt to cycle from Paris to Nottingham in just five days.
The team is made up of Jon Collins, ex Councillor and previous Leader of the Council, John Taylor, Jill Wilkinson from Education Charity Keys to Success, and a support team from Nottingham City Homes. They will leave Paris on Tuesday 14th April hoping to arrive at the Forest home game against Coventry on Saturday the 18th April 2009.
In July 2007, Jon and John were part of a group which managed to raise over £25,000 through completing the “3 Peaks” challenge in under 24 hours. They hope to raise £10,000 this time. The event has already gathered the support of a number of high profile individuals and organisations in the City.
Attached are details of how sponsorship and gifts can be made in the hope that you will feel able to help us finish the Trust’s magnificent efforts and in so doing establish a lasting memorial to Danielle which will be an inspiration to Nottingham’s young people.

by Jared Apr 09, 2009, 02:33:52 pmI think you make a fair point.
However, there's certainly nothing to stop anyone at all doing a similar thing if they can be arsed and two other people are going along with Jon Collins (granted that one of them is a former council leader himself). Hopefully the fact that it kicks off during the Easter holidays shows that there is an emphasis on doing this in their own time (hopefully using annual leave for the other days).
I find it hard to get excited about any sort of party politics, local or national, but from meeting and interviewing him a while back I have more respect for Collins than most politicians. He didn't duck too many questions and did seem to be a decent bloke. I'll never forget his obvious joy at a certain shit city centre nightclub closing down ("Im very pleased that The Works closed...")

by Stillman Apr 09, 2009, 02:46:07 pmYeah I like collins too. He's one of my ward councillors and does generally seem to care. The city council's in a bad place now, admittidly a great deal of the bad is self-inflicted, but what a lot of the haters on thisisnottingham seem to forget is that the city boundaries contain pretty much all the crappy areas and all the problems that brings. It's okay for them to judge at how the poor oiks in the inner city should live from the comfort of their 500k house in edwinstowe or whatever! stop ranting man
Anyway as you say Jared a good idea and I wish them all the best.
