Ashley Dilkes chatted to Nottingham's All Torque breaking crew

All Torque are Nottingham's premier breaking crew. Keep an eye out for them across the city entertaining everyone from the student masses to the underground classes. They have performed at various gigs all over Notts including Detonate, Embrace and OneTwoHQ.
They also run a regular training night at the YMCA (near police/fire station in city centre). This is open to all ages and abilities. Ash went down to discuss what they're up to, where they're coming from and their thoughts on hover boards.

Collectively: "Big, Bad, Heavy, Ugly."

That's only 4 words?

Tom (Popkid): "Shouldn't have had that spliff. That's five words."

How did you all hook up and how long have you been going for?

Tom: "I've known Erron since back in Leeds; we have trained together since then."

Erry: "About 7 years ago, yeah 6-7 years."

How did you hook up with Nottingham people?

Leo: "I came to Nottingham about 3 years ago, and we been like brothers ever since."
Owen (Birkavich): "I live in Leicester and there's no breakers in Leicester that are as motivated as these guys, so I've been coming over and training with these lot for 2 years or so."

Explain what's going on at the YMCA Every Thursday?

Leo: "Big sprung floor... It's a chance for us to train and vibe off each other but it's also a chance for kids starting up to come down and practice."

What are the pros and cons of living a freestyle life as opposed to getting your typical 9-5?

Erry: "Better to strive to do what you want rather than doing what someone else wants you to do. If you wake up every morning dreading another day, dragging yourself out of bed and drinking endless cups of coffee just to make it through another monotonous day at the office. Then something's obviously wrong..."

What was the best gig you have breaked at so far?

Tom: "The one at the Rescue Rooms with JEHST, No one was talking about JEHST, everyone was talking about us dancing, and yeah it got fresh as we got the crowd surfing."
Leo: "For me the Cambridge May balls; the most boozy event of the year, thousands of pounds pumped into these kids that were drinkin champagne; dancing for that man, that was the highlife."

Owen: "Certainly some memorable lingerie fashion shows"

Erry: "We did a show for Killa Kella and for some time after we kept getting mistaken for him, dunno how that happened."

So how long before hover boards are invented like in Back to the Future?

Tom: "I'd say at least 25 years."

Owen: "I'd say 24."

Will you be getting one when they come out?

Owen: "I think I've already seen them, yeah I've seen 'em."

Erry: "Yeah on that Girl skate video, they have actually got hover boards."

Only in the video though when do you think they will be available in reality?

Erry: "When they are sold to the general public I reckon it will be another hit."

Tom: "Yeah like a mini scooter."

Erry: "Yeah but better, kids wouldn't impale themselves through the chest on it, but remember you can't go on water with em."

Tom: "Why don't you make like a tree McFly?"

What's your favourite tune of 2004 so far?

Owen: "I'd say Divine Interlect - Pedestrians."

Leo: "Yeah, yeah I've got a tune; you can buy it in any good quality record stores, my boys in Cambs: Delegates of Culture and its called Aversion Therapy by Dr Skuff."

Tom: "Rockin Revelations Dub by Iration Steppas."

Least favourite tune of 2004?

Owen: "Anything by The Streets, especially that new one where he just doesn't bother."

Hiphop is a very popular form of music now, how do you see the underground scene developing in the future?

Tom: "I don't think it's hip hop that's blown up really it's just rap."

Owen: "You could say that because there's a film out about the life and times of Jesus then Christianity is everywhere, but in time there would be people who would've gone to see that film now that wouldn't be following that same religion, but there will always be the hardcore that have always followed it, same applies to hip hop you know what I mean, at the moment there might be a lot of people talking all this stuff about whatever. But when it comes down to it there's a certain few that are gonna be following it no matter what, it's those that come and change with the tides that are off."

Do you reckon it's making it easier for the up and comings?

Owen: "If something is available to everyone, then those who've actually got heart in it and that are trying to do well, and have actually spent time for hours and hours pursuing talents and just getting better at stuff, those people can push there work out to those which, are now, willing to accept it because it's cool at the moment, if that's the case then yeah it should be used to their advantage."

Leo: "Hiphop's always gonna be underground if you're doing it for yourself, my form of hip hop: breaking, that's underground because I'm not doing it for anyone else, I reckon there will always be an underground as long as you're doin it for yourself."

Owen: "I been beatboxing for about 5 years, breakin for about the same as that, rappin since I was 11 or something stupid like that, I'm gonna carry on doing it whether it's cool or not, I make music for me, but my album's out, it's on Mainrock Records, it's called work in progress."

OK any more plugs, big ups or shout outs?

Owen: "The powerboys, spinspin, style styles, spin wizards and anyone from Leeds."

Erry: "Shane, Steve Johnson."

Tom: "Yeah definitely Steve Johnson from Leeds."

Owen: "Skywalker crew from Leicester."

Leo: "The fruit and veg shop on Alfreton Road, you can get some really nice stuff, get down there. It's number one."

Owen: "Possibly Levis jeans if they give us the sponsorship deal, yeah Forecast clothing too, or anyone else that's gonna give us free clothes basically."
