Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro are back in Meet the Fockers, the sequel to the hit movie Meet the Parents. This time they have brought some friends along, Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand.
Gaylord (Stiller) has to introduce Jack (DeNiro) to his parents, before he and Pam can marry. His mother is a sex therapist and his father gave up his job as a lawyer to be a house husband. The results are disastrous.
Unfortunately, what we get from this film is much the same as the first film, with Gaylord getting himself in trouble trying to impress Jack. This time it does not have the same effect as the first film. Yes, there are laughs, but they don't have the same impact.
The four lead actors do their best with the script that they have been given. Most of the laughs come from Stiller, Streisand and Hoffman. DeNiro does not have any stand out moments or laughs, he also looks like he does not want to be in this film. The stand out performance for me was Streisand, who after an 8-year absence from the screen, is fabulous and you really believe that she is Stiller's mother.
There are some very funny moments; the baby says a rude word (repeatedly), and the dog is flushed down the toilet. But most of the jokes in this film are not original and more could have been made of the Focker name.
If you are going to leave when the credits roll (which you might do if you have a girlfriend like mine), don't as there is more to come.
Overall, the movie promised so much, but delivered so little and should have been better with the cast that had been assembled.
