Captain everything don’t worry too much about image or what other bands are doing, they sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before and they are the envy of many a band out there on the UK punk scene.
They’ve toured Canada with bands such as Death By Stereo, Tsunami Bomb, Big Wig and Belvedere, they are about to tour Japan and are saving the face of British punk rock. The scene has really diluted over the past few years with the growth of emo and the demise of many older bands such as snuff.
Nottingham’s punk scene is almost non-existent and this is reflected at gigs, most people seem to be more interested in what Kerrang recommends and there is little knowledge of past bands like Consumed whom started out in Nottingham and then went massive.
I’d started the evening at the Old Angel to see up and coming punk band Sheriff Fatman before dashing to Rock City to arrive just as Captain Everything were taking the stage. Not many students around, probably due to exams and it being a Tuesday, but there were van loads of fourteen year olds all sporting Captain Everything T-shirts. The band is pleased to see so many new faces and of course the usual suspects, myself included, which will do almost anything to see this band. One girl had travelled from Norwich just for the gig, I myself travelled to Portsmouth to see them after I’d heard their first album music by idiots.
They have a very loyal group of fans around the country; I always tell people that I consider them to be the best and certainly the fastest punk band in the UK today and many others feel the same. Singer and Guitarist Lewis recently got married and had to start this tour the day after he arrived back from his honeymoon.
However after having so much time off the Watford wonders are full of energy and ready for a damn good show. During one of their most popular songs picture of you, quite unexpectedly by the band, the overly excited crowd took over the stage and about twelve people sung the entire song forcing Lewis to the back out of sight. What was really funny was the speed and discipline of which they jumped off the stage at the end of the song. The band are recording there fourth album Rap Metal bought my house but Captain Everything bought my fridge in August and will probably be touring again around October. If the UK punk scene does make a mainstream come-back, expect to see Captain Everything at the forefront!Captain Everything played at Rock City on 31 May 2005
