Ten Great comic books for adults
1. From Hell. Alan Moore's classic reworking of the Jack the Ripper tale was later made into a film starring Johnny Depp. The comic is definitely worth digging out, with truly stunning oil painting and more insight than they could cram in the film!
2. Watchmen. Another classic by Alan Moore and probably a contender for best comic book ever written. It probably would have been made into a film by now if special effects technology was up to it. It follows a group of bizarre superheroes with real lives. Once you read it you will never forget...
3. Arkham Asylum. About as truly scary as Batman ever got. Dark moments like the Joker twisting a pencil into a fellow mental patients eye are the kind of things film directors have overlooked in favour of bullshit like Batgirl. Written by Grant Morrison.
4. 100 Bullets. You've got a suitcase full of information that proves someone has seriously wronged you and 100 untraceable bullets with their name on. What you gonna do?
5. Animal Man. A minor superhero character in the DC Universe was taken by author Grant Morrison and turned into a work of great philosophy. He can assume the power of any animal within a nearby radius. Sounds really clichéd, but you just got to read it for yourself.
6. Cerebus. The concept was just a little leftfield. Dave Sim would spend his whole life writing about an Aardvark who used to hang around with the likes of Groucho Marx and Marilyn Monroe. Interesting...
7. Preacher. This comic will be the next one to get the big Hollywood treatment, with everyone from Hugh Jackman to Ben Affleck being mentioned in the lead role. Jessie Custer is a Preacher who actually has the power of god. The series spanned sixty something comics, all with stunning art by Glen Fabry and well crafted stories by Irish writer Garth Ennis.
8. The Sandman. Epic tale by Neil Gaiman. I never got into these as much as some of my friends, but you have to give it its due. The character of Death
9. Exit. Nabiel Kanan's tale of growing up and coming of age was a mix of Dead Poets Society and Human Traffic.
10. Hellblazer. John Constantine is almost immortal and he doesn't give a fuck!
