The Big Wheel
The kings of sustainable transport – The Big Wheel, are bringing us a treat this weekend, as they’ve had the approval of a road closure along Hockleys Broad Street and Carlton street for this Saturday 22 September.
Bring on the big sound-system, tropical music and gyrating girls in grass skirts, we hear you cry. But no, they are bringing us something entirely more in-line with their very respectable mission to get us all out of our cars and onto the sustainable network of trams, trains, buses and cycling that our city has to offer.
The Big Wheel Green Spaces day is part of European Mobility Week, and it's an impressive outdoor event taking place on the road surfaces. There will be a temporary lawn outside Broadway cinema which will host:

The Bicycle Ballet Company
- games
- mountain bike trials
- try out bikes
- entertainers
- singing minstrels
- caricaturists
- musicians
- a limited edition geocache treasure hunt
- and a whole heap of other activities.
The Bicycle Ballet Company will also be doing a performance on Carlton street (outside of Void) and there will be two free workshops for members of the public. It’s free for all to take part and local businesses and cafes will be extending their outdoor seating to add a slice of European café culture to the event.
The event is all about seizing the road space and utilising it for something completely different and ultimately not damaging for the environment.
