In the midst of a recession, and with the UK arts funding cut to the bone, it’s not an easy task trying to produce a film these days unless you have backing from major companies and distributors. Which is a shame because there are hundreds upon hundreds of stories, tales and imaginations that should be allowed the chance to be seen by few and many and you. However, the indie film scene is not totally doomed, solutions have popped up all over the place with a favourite being crowd funding. Basically, loads of people dob in what they can afford to help get films made that they actually want to see and as such, a community project is born…
With an indiegogo campaign that started in Spring 2011, Emily Greenwood raised funds to film her latest short, Cold Warrior. The film is inspired by abortion-doping allegations that have come to light in recent years from a former President of the Olympic Committee. The pregnancy and subsequent abortion leads to a natural boost of red blood cells and hormones giving the gymnast an undetected increase in strength. Gymnasts, some as young as fourteen, were believed to have been impregnated by their coaches and then forced to undergo traumatic abortions after a three month term. Cold Warrior is the fictional story of Ana who finds herself in the middle of such a plot.
Filmed in Nottingham in June, Emily is now busy in the cutting room adding the finishing touches to the film. But if you’re going to do a job, you should do it properly and this is why Emily is asking people to give her one last financial push so that she can perfect the piece. The extra funds are needed to pay for archive footage of former Olympic Romanian gymnast Emilia Eberle to add to the film, music production for the score, and a Photron camera to capture Ana performing a double somersault in super slow motion which will make the scene poetry in motion as she curls through the air.
