University Dos and Don’ts: Here’s How to Get the Best Out of Your Student Experience When Meeting New People
Thu 21 Sept 2023One of the best parts about transitioning to university and moving to a brand new city is the opportunity to widen your friendship circle and meet people from all across the country - and even the globe. For lots of people, it can be daunting coming into a brand new environment with expectations created by the likes of social media, trashy teen movies, and older siblings.
But the uncertainty of who you will meet and spend at least the next three years with should be an exciting prospect. During Freshers’ Week, you will end up repeatedly telling people what you’re studying and the name of your childhood pet - and as frustrating as this may get, it will all be worth it, because eventually you will meet the people who you will share this entire experience with.
When settling into a new environment, university included, you have a very simple responsibility to respect everyone that you encounter, even if there is a difference of opinion - whether this is political or religious beliefs, interests and hobbies, attitudes towards drinking alcohol, or different cultural backgrounds. So, we have curated some dos and don’ts that you should keep in mind when you arrive in your new home and meet your new flatmates and friends…

"Don't waste!": Joshua Sofaer on Regulated Exhibition at Backlit Gallery
Fri 19 Nov 2021Cambridge-born artist Joshua Sofaer loves a bit of rubbish. So much so that in his latest exhibition Regulated Exhibition, currently on view at Backlit Gallery, Sofaer has transformed the gallery into a factory of sorts: a recycling sorting facility, science museum, and contemporary art gallery all rolled into one. In conversation with Leftlion arts correspondent Marta Tavares, Sofaer speaks about his passion for waste, the climate emergency, and his unending curiosity for the world we live in...
Queer Band Slash Fiction on their Upcoming Show at JT Soar: " If we don't fight for visibility, what are we even doing?"
Wed 12 Feb 2020Since I moved to Nottingham as a young, queer person, I’ve been fortunate to stumble into the world of local indie, punk and DIY punk gigs, which have provided me with a community and more importantly, a place to go on a Friday night. Now, as an older, queer lesbian, I’m aware of the importance of carving out queer spaces, especially within rock clubs and bars that can be dominated by cis-gender, heterosexual boys.
We spoke to Beans from Queer band Slash Fiction ahead of their upcoming Fan Club debut show at JT Soar about personal lyrics, influences and their EP Flowers...

Five Leaves Bookshop Don't Know When Their Birthday Is
Wed 05 Jul 2017One of the highlights of Five Leaves Publications’ tenth anniversary was the argument between those present as to whether the anniversary was actually the eleventh or twelfth. We know for sure our twentieth anniversary was either 2015 or 2016. It certainly is not 2017. Either way, we forgot about it until LeftLion asked us what we’ve learned in two decades of publishing. What we’ve learned, is that we’re crap at anniversaries...
