Homemade's brownie and amaretto milkshake - photo by Rose Pearce
I’ve been to this charming little cafe before and was intrigued to hear that they were holding a fifties diner night with two courses, an alcoholic milkshake and free entry to The Bopp at Pandora’s Box for £20, an event that staff told me when I booked my table was very successful and a lot of fun last year.
On arrival I was delighted to see that the staff and many of the diners had dressed up in their best stylish fifties outfits, with more neck scarves and red lips than a school production of Grease. A band struck up scene-setting covers from a tiny corner of the cafe (although, as an annoying pedant, I have to note that they were nearly always songs from the sixties). All around me I could see people tucking into American diner-size portions of burgers, wings, chips, chocolate fudge cake and other hip-stickingly tasty treats, and I followed suit with some barbeque ribs to start and then a triple-decker club sandwich.
But first the most delicious error occurred, in the form of a brownie and amaretto milkshake, which my whole party drank immediately, and then was puzzled to find that they could barely manage their starters. It would have perhaps have been wiser on Homemade’s part to serve the milkshake, packed full of brownie and cream goodness, after the food, but then they wouldn’t have sold many desserts that night so I can see what led them to this decision. However, the result was that all of us guiltily left a large portion of our mains on our plates rather than stuffing them right into our faces as we would have done on any other occasion.
Bloated but happy, we eventually stirred ourselves to get our free pass to The Bopp for a little retro dance fun. As I left I spoke with a staff member who told me that the event had been so successful that they were thinking of running it on a monthly basis. So, if you get the chance in the near future, give fifties a try for a night. Just try to keep off the milkshake until you’ve eaten, is my advice.
