Alex Davis discusses a writing course he's running at the Broadway

There are getting to be more and more writing workshops and writing courses out there, many focussing on one particular aspect of literature. In my time I've programmed a good few, been to plenty and had a chance to see what has worked and what hasn't. A good writing course is an incredibly valuable thing, and should provide important information as well as much-needed inspiration for any writers. It's also a great way to meet fellow writers and develop new ideas for you work.

However it's been my experience that while a lot of courses and workshops offer plenty of inspiration, there's often a gap in terms of what you should do with your writing once it's finished. It's all very well having a complete story, or novel, or novella, but it's not doing any good gathering dust in a draw. As a writer, what you want is for people to be reading and enjoying your work. And that's where the inspiration for FROM IDEA TO PUBLICATION arose from.

FROM IDEA TO PUBLICATION runs over eight weeks and kicks off at Broadway on the 17 January, running over eight Tuesdays and finishing on 6 March. The concept very much is that people go away not only knowing how to write a great story, but also what happens afterwards – including options like submitting to a literary magazine, sending to a small press and seeking an agent. There is also practical advice on publicity for writers, making a living as a writer and how to deal with publishers. This career section of the course follows a first half which focuses on the creative aspect of writing, including sessions on plot and character, description and atmosphere, forms of writing and editing your work.

Overall, whether you're an absolute beginner, you've just started getting your work down or you're a more experienced scribe, FROM IDEA TO PUBLICATION offers the ideal overview of all the key areas for aspiring professional writers today. The course has already had a number of sell-out runs, so be sure not to miss out this time around!

Full information and booking details for the course can be found at the Broadway website
