From Drop In The Ocean to the Hockley Hustle, Nottingham is renowned for the quantity and quality of its music benefits, so it's not at all surprising that the Haiti Earthquake has brought out the best from our local talent and music venues once more.
This weekend - Feb 20-21 - sees one of the best responses we've come across so far; a two-night bash at the Golden Fleece on Mansfield Road, with a ton of DJs and bands collaborating to raise as much cash as possible for Save The Children.
One of the grimmest aspects of the aftermath of the disaster is the fate of thousands of children left orphaned - and seeing as Haiti already has a shocking record of child trafficking, they need help more than ever. Save The Children are one of the main charities working on the ground registering kids and offering shelter, and they need as much cash as possible to keep their operations going.
The Fleece's event kicks off on Saturday 20 February with an astounding collective of DJs from the cream of the local scene, including Detonate, Basslaced, Percussion, Cult, Wigflex, The Hustle and Oh My Gosh, spinning the entire spectrum of tunage from D&B and dubstep to disco and hip-hop. All DJs are donating their fees to the kitty, and 10% of the night's bar take will be forked over. And the place is firmly locked in until 2am.
Sunday's events kick off with at noon with the usual Reggae Roast (possibly the finest pub Sunday dinners in the Shire, accompanied by a scorching five-hour set by the indomitable Highness Soundsystem), with the DJ fees and all proceeds from dessert sales being lobbed into the pot.
From 6pm, the forces of Farmyard Records and I'm Not From London align to deliver a line-up of some of the cities greatest bands, including hillbilly futurists Garrison, the blues-funk of Freaky Riverstyx, the furious bluster of The Beast and the Priest, and a blazing set by the ludicrously funky Captain Cor Blimey - with the two and only King Kaluha and Holmes manning the decks. Again, all band fees are going straight into the kitty, as is 10% of the night's bar take.
Not only that, but there's some serious rafflege afoot across the weekend, with prizes including tickets for the next Detonate Indoor Festival and The Noisettes, signed David Rodigan gear, free snap at the Fleece, and loads of other bits and pieces. There is no excuse to miss this event, particularly as there's no door tax whatsoever. But please avoid being a mingebag and lob a decent amount of cash in the bucket, eh?
