There's been talk of this being Brand New's last ever tour since they don’t have a new record to record to promote and therefore no 'real reason' to to go on this tour of the UK after visiting these shores only a couple of years back in support of Daisy.
But it's obvious that for those in their 20's and 30's a night of reliving their post-hardcore/emo teenhood is probably reason enough. The Quiet Things No One Ever Knows even made it in a top 100 emo song list recently proving they've certainly left a valuable mark on that 'scene'.
The last album however saw a departure from their early sound and was different to anything they'd done before. But it was a pleasant surprise with great production and 'weird sounds' which the band say they wish they used before- such as the Bertrand Brown gospel hhymn for the opening track. Tonight, songs from the 2010 release, including Gasoline, Vices and Sink slot in to the setlist early one and fit in alongside the earlier material they play.
As soon as frontman Jesse Lacey came on stage, with his hood up, and strummed the first chord to Play Crack The Sky the crowd loudly sang back every word. Not that this was a surprise having been pre-warned that a typical Brand New gig involved the crowd pretty much drowning out the band.
They played a good mix from all four albums, but the highlight was the six tracks deemed their best known songs from the 'old days' played back to back. As soon as Jesse said 'It's time for some old ones' you could hear the excitement in the loud cheers of the crowd.
The best thing about Brand New is probably their ability to go from quiet ballads to loud raucous guitar led songs. Nine years ago Brand New were at Rock City supporting the now defunct Finch. This time round the band clearly had a good time spending the night with people who have been fans for nearly a decade.
