LIVE: Brew Dog Open Mic

Great beer, great music, and a great addition to Nottingham’s music scene. Review: Parisa Eliyon

Only one of seven Brew Dog pubs in the entire world, this Broad Street diamond is well worth spending time in, especially now on Sunday nights. You could do a lot worse than the line up Rob Davidson and Marq Sutton get together, in fact, you probably couldn’t get any better for an open mic night.

Feeling all summery thanks to glorious sunshine, and wearing flip flops I’d got free from some Christians the night before (yeah by the way, pissed up girls, walking bare foot = freebies), I sat in the frankly delightful bar and watched Will Jeffery’s dad’s BARBERSHOP QUARTET. Oh my God, that was unprecedented as far as entertainment goes – wonderful melodies, harmonies and all that old-time charm you rarely hear from a 4-piece called the ‘QM Barbershop Quartet’. I was so overwhelmed I booked them for June’s Acoustickle (plug, plug).

Mr Will-J himself stepped up next and gave a striking performance, as per usual. Alternative folk and a growlingly soulful voice make Will a pleasure to watch. But enough about him, his DAD is AMAZING, clearly the real talent in that family.

The Jam Cafe crew rolled in, lean as you like, to support Rob’s night and watch their friend G from The Damn Heavy do an amplified blues-rock set, that was so loud, it had to be turned back down to 10. Bradley started flashing his tits and all of them whooped and hollered loud. This is the general atmosphere: lively.

Ali Bonsai was tonight’s ‘headline’ act. The aim of these shows is to have general open mic but also book a special guest for each week. Now that’s a great idea. Moody blues laden tunes blend perfectly with super strength ales to produce that hazy kinda sensation everyone adores.

This is on every Sunday from the evening onwards, so get down, grab a board game and talk to the hot young things on the bar. Alternatively, sit and watch some of your favourite local musicians mixed in with a few wild cards.

Promoting for Acoustickle I’ve sat through many similar shows, and this is certainly a welcome addition to my weekend gig-guide. Big up yourselves Rob, Marq and Brew Dog Bar!

The Brew Dog Open Mic took place on Sunday 13 May 2012.
