Think the usual dose of Bodega’s buzz, add Nottingham Trent’s graphic design students, mix it with popcorn, a sprinkling of live art, and a dash of the best local DJ’s Nottingham has to offer, and there you have it: Dough. So you ought not be confused by this recipe, Dough is the smart idea cooked up by the graphic design department at NTU in aid of funding their final degree show. Party-goers were treated to a pop-up shop, selling tee-shirts with the eponymous logo, bags, prints and even oven-baked doughy treats.
Every one could attend with the satisfaction that not only were they contributing to the futures of these talented designers and illustrators, but they could also have a pretty great night with the sounds of local DJs such as Fnord and Tunnels, as well as Nottingham’s golden boy, Kirk Spencer.
The selection of DJs fitted the scene perfectly, with Fnord’s mixes of entrancing psychadelic jazz, indie and electro suiting the laid back pop up shop downstairs, where art students and shoppers milled around in a calm and creative atmosphere.
Upstairs seemed to be where the real action was. Students were treated with the eclectic, heavy mixes of Tunnels and Rykuvan (LOST BOYZ) who were fantastically juxtaposed against the small, intimate setting of the Bodega Social Club.

However, it was Kirk Spencer that everyone had seemed to be waiting for. Having already been played across most major radio stations this year, as well as performing at Reading, most were itching to experience his music for its unique and experimental flavour. With his latest album having dropped onto the music scene only a few months ago, other than being a local boy, Kirk seemed like the perfect choice for this utterly arty night and certainly drew in an extensive crowd at Bodega.
Dough will now continue to be a series of club nights and events, presented by Nottingham Trent University Graphic Design, and if Thursday night was to go by it is not to one be missed, perhaps only for the unimaginative.
Dough Launch Party took place at The Bodega on Thursday October 2011.
