MEMO
TO: The woman who would not shut the fuck up at the Katatonia concert

RE: SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Since you "love" your "new job at administration," I am writing to you in a format that you are familiar with.
It has recently come to my attention that when you are at a concert, you need to shut the fuck up when the band is playing. The rest of the crowd and I don't give a shit about your sister's boyfriend, the "cute dress" you bought, or where you're going to meet your friends after "this whatnot is over." As well, you must desist with your Amy Winehouse impression; it is weak and outdated.
While I regret that "metal music is not... [your] thing." This is not the fault of the band, the crowd, or myself. It is a matter to be resolved between yourself and your date before attending the gig, or even prior to the purchase of tickets.
To prevent any future conflict that may stem from your inability to shut the fuck up during the gig, I insist that you:
1. Refer to Mastodon's Audience Training Video [ATV] "Cut you with a Linoleum Knife".
2. Be considerate of the other member of the audience.
3. Shut the fuck up.
And if there continue to be matters or concerns that must be discussed during a concert, especially while a band is playing, please wait for the set to end. However, if it is urgent, follow the exit signs posted above all doors and leave the venue immediately.
Finally, because of your failure to shut the fuck up, you not only unnecessarily ruin a nice night for the other people in the crowd, but you also missed:
- An opening act, Long Distance Calling, perform their first paid gig outside of Germany. The band was so excited that the rhythm guitarist kept smiling and making the sign of the beast during the band's trippy solos.
- Swallow the Sun, a band from Finland, do an understated performance. Their style ranged from pounding grind-core to the kind of melancholy that has come to define the 'doom metal' genre.
- The headline act, Katatonia, which was playing without its regular lead guitarist and bassist, do a solid set of songs off their most recent album, 'Night is the New Day', along with a few unreleased singles. But of important note, lead singer Jonas Renkse sometimes discarded his normal clear vocals for a great metal growl that he hasn't used in several years. Hearing his growl, though it doesn't exactly fit the band's sound anymore, was a nice reminder of Katatonia’s heavier roots.
Katatonia played at Rock City on Wednesday 10 March 2010.
