Tim Kasher is usually the front man for indie rock band Cursive but was asked to join the Vans tour to charm people with his endearing songs.
Acoustic singer-songwriters can often have a tendency to be full of recycled ideas as they try to be the next Bob Dylan, but Tim fortunately has his own style. He introduces one song as "a fucked up one" with lyrics such "the world doesn’t revolve around your prick", which made people laugh. At times he is reminiscent of Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes.
He charms the audience with the humourous way he pretends to be electrocuted when the sound briefly cuts out and states that as the reason why his set must come to an end.
When The Bronx first announced they’d be swapping mosh pits for ponchos to play Mexican music many of their punk fans thought it was a joke. But after writing the beautiful Cell Mates and gigging heavily, the Mariachi El Bronx side project quickly turned in two albums.
After watching the band have a pre-gig practise in the corridor and seeing how comfortable they look on stage it’s clear that a love for traditional music has unquestionably united the group. The stage is packed with a host of exotic instruments including a vihuela, a jarana and a bajo sexto.
Every member on stage wears the same Mexican style outfit which adds to the traditional feel of the music. It’s clear that Mariachi El Bronx is an outlet for the band to write sweet love songs, with Revolution Girl being about how beautiful and ice cold a woman can be.
Everyone including the band had a smile on their face and danced the night away to the enthralling music and judging by the crowd’s reaction the side project has undoubtedly earned the respect it deserves.
Mariachi El Bronx and Tim Kasher played at The Bodega on Tuesday 22 November 2011.
