Summon The Crows by Nimming Ned is out now
Started by two Nottingham lads, Toby Hodgkinson and Chris Woods, Nimming Ned have added to their previously lo-fi acoustic sound by bringing fiddle player and accordion maestro Jim Walker and Shell boy Leddington into the band, with tremendous results.
Summon The Crows, their newly released album, is played out before the capacity crowd, and the band show the musical deftness and subtlety to quickly switch between upbeat, dance-worthy numbers like Glass Half Full, and the wonderfully heartfelt folk ballad, Farewell. The applause is warm, and the fiddle playing in particular, is sublime.
The band’s Nottingham roots play a part in their music with songs paying reference to Robin Hood and local beer, Elsie Mo. The latter is one of the highlights and Chris and Toby keep the audience participation in full flow as everyone is sings back the lyrics to the chorus.
Without doubt the true highlight came as the evening came to a climax. With the crowd enjoying themselves ever more, the band produced their tightest, most uplifting song of the evening with the lively, and brilliant Crowman.
If you want the most beautifully polished, perfect outfit, then perhaps the Neds aren’t for you. If you want to share the sheer exuberance and joy of wonderful folk music then you are in the right place. What is most clear during the evening is the wonderful musical friendship amongst the band – the evening felt like some talented friends showing you their latest work, and that is a welcome asset to have.
