Embarking upon a short UK tour in support of the re-release of Disaster Tourist, which has been re-packaged with bonus tracks for America and Japan after being picked up by specialist record label Saint Marie Records, the shoegazers swing by The Bodega for a rare hometown show.
The band are also taking this opportunity to road test a whole bunch of new material. Out of their 9 song long set, 4 are brand new - Budge Up, Bright Eyes, Flute Song and You’ll Do Anything I Say. They don’t deviate massively from the Spotlight Kid template, essentially an attempt to mix My Bloody Valentine’s wall of fuzz with the delicacies of Slowdive.
It’s still early days for these news songs, and they could change from they way they are presented here as the band continue tinkering with them, but Spotlight Kid clearly relish in the opportunity to crank out some newies. Bright Eyes was the stand-out of this collection with a driving melody from singer Katty Heath ably supported by some stinging guitars.
For the past couple of years the band have toured extensively up and down the country including dates at Glastonbury Festival, Y-Not as well as supporting fellow ‘nu-gazers’ Joy Formidable at Koko in London. This busy schedule has seen them become a powerful live outfit. Tonight this is no exception as they smash their way through choice picks from Disaster Tourist making the songs sound even bigger than they do on record, turning them into widescreen epics.
There’s A Reason Why engulfs the The Bodega in a tsunami of kaleidoscopic noise that threatens to take the roof off. Whilst the closing song of the evening All Is Free is a supercharged rocketship of delicious nagging melodies and intense shimmering guitars, summing up everything that Spotlight Kid do so well.
