The music-keen Nottingham folk were spoilt for choice with four - yes, four - blisteringly unique and diverse bands. Of course, the reason the night was held in the first place was as the launch for Swimming’s new album, Ecstatics International, which hits the spot for anyone who enjoys a bit of psychedelic rock enhanced with an unusual blend of sweet, melodic pop.

However, not to be forgotten are WeShowUpOnRadar, with his trusty ukulele, and Moscow Youth Cult’s electro-pop sounds; both entirely different musicians, yet the perfect start to what turned out to be a great night thanks to the eclectic mix of artists and sounds.

Oh, and everyone loves a surprise, right? Well the audience were surely surprised when the mystery guest turned out to be Norway’s very own, The Megaphonic Thrift; a fantastically noisy bunch who ended the night with their tuneful psychedelic rock leaving all ears tingling with pure satisfaction.

The music on the night was fluid, from WeShowUponRadar’s soothing folk/acoustic pop to Moscow Youth Cult’s more energetic electro set, with the added special effects of some arty videos playing in the background. Those who attended witnessed some of the most imaginative and inventive new music coming out of Nottingham at the moment. Swimming’s set was no exception; they flowed between genres and oozed a unique sound that got the crowd surely smiling.

I suppose it would be fair to suggest that the instinctive theme of the night was pop; pop made that little bit cooler, however, by the experimental approach and blends of textures the bands, creating something totally unique and uplifting. Who knew that pop, combined with a few extra touches, could raise the spirits of so many? Swimming did, which is perhaps why their second album should be as much of a roaring success as this Friday night was.
