Last Wednesday night’s Vice Magazine launch review reminded of that Cribs song Hey Scenesters! - and scenesters there were. A plethora of them, queuing up for their free American Apparel gifts and drinks tokens, and showing off their awesome tattoos and hipster shoes.
Vice is a firm favourite for the cool kids, and their new website is very spangly and suave indeed, so it is only fair that they had a party and musical talent to live up to their name.
Representing the local talent was two piece I Am Lono, who opened the night and had people running to grab a copy of their EP by the end of their set. Melding thumping electro with ice cold goth atmospherics, they whip up a bewitching new-wave storm. Plus, to be honest Matthew Cooper and David Startin looked like they came of the Vice website themselves, which is actually a compliment. Honest.

Following up was Rattle, something of an all-female Notts supergroup two piece, featuring as they do Tez from Fists and Katy from Kogumaza; they show off their amazing, experimental drum skills, and sounded like they were playing deep inside an echo chamber. Forget Norman Cook this is Big Beat! At points their harmonising left a little to be desired, perhaps lacking a touch of reverb to help it blend in with the drums, but this was more than compensated for with their sticks and the interesting use of a tea towel.
Headliners Walls is the teaming up of Banjo or Freakout’s Alessio Natalizia and Sam Willis of Allez Allez and they defnitely showed us why electronic music is still pushing boundaries is with an electro/indie/krautrock mashup. The pair used two mixing desks producing interesting hooks and an electric guitar to stop the music becoming too bleepy. The guys definitely got a good response from the crowd with people busting moves down the front. A very exciting foray indeed, I for one am definitely at their next gig.

Kirk Spencer was DJing alongside the Dollop, spinning a whole host of banging tunes, showing why he is getting so much attention of late. Eventually the mohawks started to wilt and eyeliner to run and the scenesters hopped on the bandwagon to bed to dream of sex with the famous and being covered in neon paint. If you missed the party, you missed out.
The Vice Magazine October launch with live music from I Am Lono, Rattle and Walls took place at the Rescue Rooms on Wednesday October 2 2011.
