Ever wondered what the deal is with all the musical numbers and routines in Family Guy? Hardly a show goes by without Lois, Stewie and co launching into some twisty take on a classic movie number, they're arguably the best bits. 'I need a Jew' and the 'Sh-poopy' song at the baseball ground immediately spring to mind.

Well, all may become clear on Sunday 5 December as Seth MacFarlane is in Nottingham and he'll be clutching sheet music. Seth will be performing in A Celebration of the Classic MGM Musicals with an all-star cast of singers and a full orchestra under John Wilson.
Turns out Seth’s closet addiction to the sounds of Hollywood musicals and great crooners has been an obsession since an early age. He’s apparently got a pretty handy singing voice himself - having trained with some of Frank Sinatra's coaches - and is right at home with a bit of Bing Crosby and Gene Kelly, inbetween conceiving general hilarity, wrongness and Star Wars references for the show.

They'll be laying down a barrage of widescreen belters from great Hollywood composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern. Plus performances from Sir Thomas Allen, Kim Crisswell and Curtis Stigers, as well as Seth himself as they show off some of the best-loved numbers from the MGM films, including High Society, Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris and The Wizard of Oz. Much of this will be heard live for the first time in its original form in scores newly reconstructed by John Wilson.
I'm hoping we'll get to hear the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back as well, fingers crossed Seth's other obsession will be lurking under the surface. Should be good.
John Wilson & The John Wilson Orchestra - A Celebration Of The Classic MGM Film Musical plays at the Royal Concert Hall on Sunday 5th December 2011.
