Trent Degree Shows 2010

The return of the annual Nottingham Trent University degree shows

Paper Planes, Alma Haser

You may have noticed that the wrappings are finally coming off the regenerated Arkwright and Newton buildings at Nottingham Trent University – and your first chance to see what £90m quid worth of fixtures and fittings gets you these days happens right now, as the annual final year shows of students from the Schools of Art and Design and the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment kick off.

Open to the public, and costing you exactly nuppence, it’s a chance to find out what the bar staff of Nottingham get up to during the hours of daylight, spanning a huge range of practices and disciplines; sculpture, painting, illustration, graphics, photography, print, moving image, theatre, digital design…it’s all on show here. And did we mention fashion, knitwear and textiles, decorative arts, architectural design projects, futuristic products and cutting-edge furniture and interior solutions? There’ll be plenty of that, too.

The first event – the 20ten catwalk event – starts May 20 to 21, when fashion design and fashion knitwear design students present their final year collections, in the hope of being selected for the prestigious River Island Graduate Fashion Week at Earl Court, in June. From there, it’s an array of prominent design shows including Free Range, the biggest of its kind in Europe.

The annual photography showcase – this year entitled Raw – will once again spread itself over the city from May 24 to June 4, filling up empty spaces with innovative imagery. Now in its 14th year, the event is starting to attract some serious international recognition – and anything that gets art critics into Viccy Market on a Tuesday afternoon has got to be something special.

 The new Arkwright Building

The Gothic-style Arkwright building, with its sublimely lit studios, will be fittingly used as the exhibition space for the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment courses. Shows will include interior architecture and design, architecture and architectural technology, product design and furniture and product design. Meanwhile, work from courses across the School of Art and Design can, as always, be viewed in Bonington (the Uni's purpose-built centre for creativity) and Waverley (home to the very first Nottingham School of Art and Design in 1843).

All this creativeness will be happening from June 5 -  9, so don't miss it!
