The opening act, Lily Clarkson, sets the tone for the evening with a collection of authentic, soft melodies that bring forth a gentle atmosphere into the space. Clarkson’s acoustic singles work perfectly to mellow and relax the environment, giving people an opportunity to socialise and settle in whilst listening to some beautiful vocals and guitar.

After a brief interlude to top up drink’s and prepare, Jamcafe, which is buzzing in the mellow excitement of the previous act, introduces Indira May and Saffron who go on to perform their whole EP and a couple of their own, unreleased songs.

The girls characterise ‘Disconnected’ as a lyricised story about navigating romance and relationships in the digital age. By merging raw, lyrical transparency with technical transcendence, ‘Disconnected’ is the product of a strong bond between human and digital creativity. At times, the multi genre music runs abstract, but balanced by the girls singing and lyrics, which remain rooted in emotions, the crux of human connection remains the focal point of the performance.

By invoking and playing with a multitude of genres, their performance has the ability to effortlessly flitter between mellow beats to slightly electronic instrumentals, all whilst maintaining a jazzy, linear groove. In a multi instrumental echochamber of jazz fusion overlaid with poptones, Indiria May and Saffron collaborate to create a loose and lively atmosphere that facilitated a good dance as well as a slow groove.

The distinctively relaxed and ‘chill’ atmosphere of Jamcafe provides the perfect stage to dance and immerse yourself in the performance whilst simultaneously having the ability to socialise and enjoy your company. Environments like Nottingham’s Jamcafe are where hip, emerging artists such as Indiria May and Saffron can really be encouraged to come into their own. In the case of Wednesday night ,the style of music and its venue certainly held a fluid interaction throughout.

The 2023 collaborative project ‘Disconnected’ by Indira May and Saffron is a funky exploration of love, the human mind and the desire to connect presented through a mixed-musical medium that is the perfect gig to attend if you love funky, experimental pop.
