D.H. Lawrence is settling back into life in Taos and appears to be happy. Long may this last...

Leftlion (1200 × 800Px) Lawrence April 1924

It’s April 1924, and Lawrence is hard at work on various writing projects. He’s written three short stories, an essay about an Indian dance, and is working on finding an illustrator for Movements in European History, a school textbook.

Life seems to be pretty good. Taos, New Mexico, ‘alternates between hot sun and birds singing, and deep snow and silence’ and his host, Mabel Dodge Luhan, gifts Frieda Lawrence a 160-acre ranch. Oh, to be as poor as D.H. Lawrence, I hear you curse...

Even Dorothy Brett, who had accompanied the Lawrence’s to Taos, has settled into the pioneer life and ‘rides like an amazon in a cowboy hat, on a huge old brown mare. You never saw such a thrilled female.’ What could possibly go wrong with three females – Frieda, Mabel and Brett - all vying for Lawrence’s attention…

These video essays are based on the letters of D.H. Lawrence one hundred years ago and are published monthly as part of the D.H. Lawrence Memory Theatre project.
