The penny has finally dropped!! Congratulations, you fucking geniuses!! It's only taken you half a century to work out that a faster car spends less time on the roads!!

More petrol, more pollution, more potentially deadly accidents.

It's not actually going to make any difference is it really? everyone does 85mph+ when it's safe to anyway.

Yeah tis a funny one. Like everyone else I'm happy to tootle along at 80 if I can, though I do it far less than I used to . But its not the way forward. The drop off in economy is really quite high with mpg down around 20% from what it is at 70. Worse if its a van i think. So as everyone will now drive at 90 we'll actually be causing an instant environmental disaster. Thanks for that. I would have rather seen then strictly enforce the 70 limit possibly even with speed limiters. No more nonsense, no more speeding fines, no knob flashing his lights in your rear view when your already doing 75 in th outside lane coming down the A1.

The non-government seem to have caved to what the populous thinks it wants rather than what is really needed. Which obviously should more responsible and economic driving and less powerful cars.

Blinkered.

Utter bollocks. If you're stuck out there for twice as long, you pollute for twice as long and as a former profession driver of 30 yrs exp I can assure you that a twat drives as much like a twat and causes just as much shit at 80 as he/she/it does at 20. If you can afford a car and you're a British citizen, history invariably contends that you'll pay whatever they ask for petrol.

10 cars on a journey of 50 miles with 50 limit = 10 cars on the road at any given period over 1hr.
@100mph = 5 cars aagp over 1 hr
= half the traffic aagp
= clearer roads
= then I can ride my antelope home

Faster cars take up more road space as they have to be further apart. So, higher speed limit = more congestion = longer journey times.
They spend a vast amount of money widening the M1 because of congestion. While the work was going on, there was a 50 mph speed limit. The consequence? Very little congestion because the traffic was able to move more smoothly. They could have just reduced the speed limit and not bothered widening the road and saved a whole load of money.

The Tories are desperate for good headlines. Spending a quarter of a billion pounds on emptying the bins more often is just Cameron's version of the Cones Hotline. No ideas, no plans, no guts - just listen to a focus group of middle-aged, middle of the road people and do whatever they say.

Truth be known, the 80mph limit has been around for years, just not on paper/letter of law.
I'll take that back If it turns out anyone has been prosecuted for doing 80mph on the motorway in the last 10 years.

Ps: My car gets it's best mpg at 80mph on the motorway, this depends on the car. cc, petrol, diesel etc.

It's a fair comment Adrian, but as you said yersen - we're only talking half the motorway here. Eddie Stobart and The Caravan Club aren't going to be having a wankfest over this
