36 years on and still ignorant to the reality and importance of sexism..Girls go free.

(or any boys who are fans of the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act - put your name on the event wall and come dressed as a girl and get in FREE before 11pm!)

Shouldn't everybody be a fan of the sex discrimination act?

And I suppose you think dressing as a girl means wearing something different to a boy.

No doubt you're being "ironic" or "post feminist"...Small sigh...

Is there something wrong with taking sexism seriously? The promotion itself doesn't seem to contain any frivolity or humour, instead it is sullied with the fetid entrails of right wing ignorance.

Accept sloppy thinking like this at your peril.

I'm sure DJ EZ plays some lovely records.

Trellis - the night itself is an artist led club night. Our first event was a couple of years back. At the time the majority of artist led events were primarily attended by the 'music heads' - who mostly happened to be guys. We thought about running a similar door policy to the Numbers clubnight in Glasgow (where they offered free entry to Girls in an attempt to bring in more girls to improve the atmosphere of their 'music-led' events). Our first event went well, resulting in us putting on more events (featuring the likes of SBTRKT, Scuba, Lone, Roska, Dark Sky, Lil Silva, Zed Bias, Mosca, D Double E & Cooly G). Neither I or the other people involved in running the night are sexist/racist/ageist/classist/homophobic etc - and I'm sorry you have taken offence.

If you want to come down to the night i'm more than happy to put you on a free guestlist so you can come and check it out :)

dlex, Thanks for the more sensible response. And thanks for the offer of free entry, sadly I won't be able to attend.

That said, just because more males are interested in your night than females, doesn't mean you can then discriminate in order to try to alter that. Whilst you say you and the other people running the night are not sexist, what you are doing is, and as far as I'm aware it is also illegal. It is also illegal to ask people to, for instance, wear a skirt, to obtain a discount, as this too would discriminate by sex. It sticks out to me like a sore thumb, and I find it weird that in 2011 people can't see the problem with it, but will then campaign for rights in other areas, unaware they are eroding them from the other side... and I'm not offended so much as disappointed.

This is a public night, and I'm sure you take organising the event seriously, so, from the equal opportunities commission:

Is it lawful for a nightclub to admit women free of charge or give them free or reduced priced drinks? If a nightclub tries to attract women with free entry or free or reduced price drinks but charges men entrance fees and higher prices for drinks then this would be a breach of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (SDA).

In 1982 a man challenged a wine bar's practice of charging men £1 admittance fee but allowed women in free. A county court judge made a declaration that he had been discriminated against although only nominal damages were awarded.

What about a newspaper that publishes advertisements for nightclubs that is admitting women free of charge but charging men for entry?Any published advertisement which suggests an intention to discriminate in this way, would itself be unlawful. Anyone can complain to an advertiser or publisher if they think an advertisement is unlawful. Under the SDA only the EOC can take legal action against advertisers or publishers. See Advertising for more information.

The club I belong to treats men and women differently because it says it is a private members' club. Is this unlawful? The current interpretation of the law is that genuinely private members' clubs are not covered by the SDA

The law is very clear about it, and is also clear that whoever carries adverts with this kind of discriminatory pricing is also breaking the law, a good law in my opinion.

Some students recently had a thread complaining about it here (with a mixed bag of blokey replies suggesting they should only charge the ugly ones, or i don't mind em getting in free if they pretty the place up etc etc):

http://www.thestuden...d.php?t=1687455

similar, more mainstream thread here, with plenty of "what's the fuss about" responses:

I'm not trying to be a jobsworth or petty, I just truly believe that if you are not sexist you should not discriminate by gender. And to blatantly do so is an uncomfortable contradiction.

This is one of those instances where I actually agree with Trellis. Although I am aware this sexism used to be standard practice at many UK Garage events.

'Do Transgenda's and ladyboys get in for Half price?' That is the question I'm asking? :D

They know the only way to get money out of blokes pockets is to pack the place out with scantily clad young ladies.
Everyone knows sex sells, it's the advertisers best friend always has been.

I'm worried now. Our last Halloween party had this guy turn up dressed as a dead lady and he got in half price on a discount because of it. Plus he had 'whited up' his face. Trellis - what are the rules here and can we now be closed down because of it? To make matters worse we played disco music all night too. I know that's not going to look good in court is it?

Ok, most drole, and I'm sure you're kidding, and am guessing you don't see the problem here, but in either case, relax, you have nothing to fear. As long as you didn't advertise or arrange your pricing to specifically differentiate between the sexes or races, you are safe, both morally and legally. I think a "dead people go free" night would be just fine, I'm sure I'm not alone in finding the woman pictured above particularly alluring.

@Mouse. One event out of thousands posted being criticised for having an unfair and outmoded door policy and you feel its the forum that has gone downhill? seriously? I think your trying to detract from the real issue here.

I understand that all this seems annoying and trivial to you and you don't give a shit, and whilst its far from crime of the century stuff, I truly think its a bad idea to ignore or dismis it. This isn't "girls shouldn't wear skirts", or "ban baa baa black sheep" right-on nonsense. This is simple core sexism; differential pricing based on gender for the same product. Think about it, do you actually think its ok to charge people differently because of their gender? Or do you think its ok because its your local friendly club and maybe includes some of your mates and they're all ok so it can't be that wrong, and you can't be arsed to challenge it within yourself?

Just saying fucksake, and jesus wept is pretty lame really...
