Dolly’s Imagination Library

alt text

Dolly Parton had an aim to provide the young people in her hometown, Tennessee, with a gift. She wanted each child to love reading. So Dolly created a way of giving each child a book every month until they are five years old. This idea expanded out across the world, even here in Nottingham, and now Dolly thinks that we could soon be the biggest partners of Dolly’s Imagination Library in the UK. The way Dolly’s idea works, is that you sign your child up to receive books every month. The goal is that every child has access to this scheme, but Dolly’s team needs the funds to do so. By putting your money in to having a good time at Hockley Hustle, you might be able to be part of a good cause that provides for children that need the facilities to read. Let’s get every child learning, developing and having fun.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum

alt text

This organisation works with refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire who are reaching out for fair opportunities and a way to link with their local society. They provide independent, voluntary-led projects that involve giving advice and information to people who need a helping hand. They also provide a special service for young’uns – a safe space where they can play, learn and communicate. The Forum also provide art and drama workshops, first-aid courses and trips out to cool places to help them gain life memories, opportunities and support with emotional wellbeing. Another thing the Forum can do is help many people who come to them with food and groceries. This is accomplished through their Saturday Food group – where people are given two bags of shopping and a hot meal. People who have come to this country in need of support often don’t get the help they need, so it’s about time we did summat about it.

CYF Project

alt text

Nottingham Children, Young people and their Families Project work mainly in inner-city Nottingham. Their charity works with people experiencing “social exclusion and extreme disadvantage”. They work with children by using experience to boost their confidence, make them feel more self-aware and improve the quality of their lives. CYF provide experiences for children and young people who are in a position where they may not possibly be able to attend due to certain circumstances such as lack of care and support. The people that work for this charity take everything in to consideration and cleverly conduct a way that ensures a child can go to special events or attend support and advice sessions. Nottingham CYF teach our new generations about responsibility and discipline, which is crucial for living in society. Services like this ensure that children of today are not left locked indoors with no sense or understanding of social acceptability - which is all the more of a reason to go and have fun on Sunday 9 October.

Nottingham Rethink

alt text

Stamping out the stigma and bringing education about mental illness, Nottingham Rethink are a group all about bringing people together. Rethink support those with severe mental illness and their families with discussions, meetups, outings, expert advice and guidance. On their website they offer information and ways of understanding what mental illness means, how it’s diagnosed and some ways of dealing with the everyday problems they occur. This community of people are coming together to not only help those in need but create a general understanding around mental illness. Rethink brings the ideas of creating a better quality of life and ensuring equal lifetime opportunities for everybody to the drawing board. This autumn, we can say thank you for all of the support Rethink brings to our local community - it’s all the more reason to put our dancing shoes on.

John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre

alt text

This centre was made specifically for saving lives and supporting the treatment of cancer. The John Van Geest Cancer Centre looks closely at improving the diagnosis of breast and prostate cancer. They also try to develop more vaccines for people with cancer that will improve their rates of survival and quality of life. The scientists that work in this charity are world class, and are trying every day with modern tech to create a wider variety of options for people who have cancer or will experience it in the future. All donations are spent entirely on research and on the staff at the facility - so you can ensure that your money will be spent in a reasonable, worthwhile way that helps pave the future for cancer patients. It’s a no brainer to help the people that are working each day to care for the people of our future.

Equation

alt text

Equation do many things in subject of domestic abuse. Not only do they help those experiencing problems such as an abusive relationship, but they also do things such as educating people about healthy relationships, sending out emotional support, challenging abusive attitudes and bringing awareness to the supposed taboo that is abuse. They work closely with professionals to ensure that people going through any form of abuse from others are gaining the proper support they require. They also roll-out projects for young people and children in schools and colleges so that healthy relationships are talked about and made aware of. Equation is a great resource for those in dire need of support and care in their lives. Let’s all try hard to donate and bring awareness to such a great cause out there available for all.
