OAKS Wednesday Steaks

OAK450 We bloody love it when a local eaterie we love decides to whack on a right generous new offer. One such establishment, is OAKS restaurant and bar, just off Maid Marian Way.

Known across the city for their locally sourced and expertly cooked sausages, homemade sauces and unbeatable beef mince scotch eggs, the joint is now serving up a mighty fine slice of steak of a Wednesday evening.

For just a tenner, you can feast on an 8oz sirloin steak – cooked to your liking – with some not-to-be-knocked skin on chips an’ all. For an extra £3.50, you’ll be treated to a glass of Merlot or Pinot Grigio. Not too shabby.

Being the meat lovers we are, mysef and my partner sampled the offer. Normally, we're both big fans of a decent splash of peppercorn sauce atop our rump, and were almost disappointed when we were told we wouldn't be getting any. Still, we welcomed the change with open mouths, and patiently awaited our slabs of meat while snacking on two portions of the infamous scotch eggs. A thin layer of crumbly beef mince cuddled a deliciously runny yellow yoak. It's far too tempting to go overboard and fill up on the delicate morsels.

Without further adieu, we were presented with our meat, sitting on what looked like a slice of tree trunk - responsibly sourced from the Wildlife Trust. Perfectly pink in the middle, and tender to the touch, the peppercorn sauce was completely forgotten about as soon as I gorrit in me gob. Succulent and salty. Everything a steak should be. The homemade smoked chilli brown sauce was the best accompaniment, and the crunch of the skin-on chips was right up my road. All washed down with a good glug of merlot, we left. Bellies full.

I'd highly recommend taking your new squeeze for a slap-up meal with little damage to the bank account whatsoever. But be sure to splash the cash on a couple of those scotch eggs. Proper worth it. Take our word for it.
