The Way Forward will explore artistic re-enactment, the re-creation and repetition of the past.

Digital Stage launches the new digital arts programme at Nottingham Playhouse with a homage to the centenary year of Alan Turing, the wartime decoding genius, and takes a look back at technology. Inspired by Nottingham Playhouse’s production of Roots, by Arnold Wesker, the exhibition examines the roots of our modern technology and looks at the artists that bring old and redundant technologies back to life.

Best of CAST Commission

The CAST bar film screening present local and emerging talent whose work examines the history and development of the moving image. The work shown reflects on the similarities contemporary artists have found between their work and early methods of film making, looking at the patterns and repetitions between past and present.

Digital Stage is a new Digital Arts Programme by The Cutting Room which is being hosted at Nottingham Playhouse for 2012 funded by Arts Council England to encourage growth and development for digital arts within the East Midlands.

Skywriter

A new commission for Institute for Boundary Interactions sees a local artist goup recreate old methods of encryption in Skywriter situated on the roof of Nottingham Playhouse.

Mother Of All Demos

Paul B Davis, a pioneer in hacking and computer codes presents Mother Of All Demos, a film that looks at the digital aspirations of the 1960s and with recognisable outdated computer technologies, performs quick witted specialist interventions.

A Universal Turing Machine, As A Self Protrait

Roman Verostko presents A Universal Turing Machine, As A Self Protrait which explores the coded procedures that drive the technologies within our culture.

The Sound Before You Make It Jaki Middleton and David Lawrey re-create the Zoetrope (the original device made to form the illusion of motion) with a modern twist in an impressive kinetic sculpture The Sound Before You Make It.

Escape

Neil Mendoza and Anthony Goh reconstruct old mobile phones into a tree of interactive birds in Escape .
