Our fiction book group is open to all. Attend every meeting, occasionally or just once a lifetime. All we ask is that you read the book in advance and take part in the discussion. There’s a short introduction by a member of staff or a group regular or someone we know with a special interest in the book in question.

Here’s one that many people read when they were teenagers. One member of the group emailed in to say “It seems like a lot of people interpret the main character very differently… some people hate him very passionately and a lot of people find him relatable… or people have either hated or loved him based on how old they were when they read the book. So read or reread, and let’s work out your age depending on your point of view! This book was first published in 1951 and has been in print, we think, all this time. But with different covers than this one.

‘If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.’

Free, refreshments provided. We don’t mind where you source the book – libraries are good! – be we offer 15% discount on book group titles.
