The film was devised by tenants and partners from Newark and Sherwood Homes, Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottingham Community Housing Association and members of the Newark Safer Neighbourhood Group.
It tells the story of Ryan, a teenager who continuously displays anti social behaviour (ASB), in his local neighbourhood. The leadpartner in the project, Newark and Sherwood homes, wanted the film to raise awareness about how ASB can affect tenancy; while they have chosen a worst case scenario for the short film, it is a very real possibility within the system. All the professional characters in the script – community officers, ASB Team, Housing Services and such - are played by themselves as it was important for everyone involved in the project to get the real life protocols correct.
Regardless of the low budget and of what the film was intended for, Four Walls is a well shot, professional looking short with great performances – the formidably named Elliot Otis Brown Walters is convincing as the disaffected youth, Ryan, and Molly May Gardiner and Ester Coles – as his sister and mum – play off him naturally. Walters, winner of a BAFTA for CBBC’s drama Summerhill, and Gardiner are another two products of Nottingham’s TV workshop.
