You haven’t really lived until you’ve had a homemade doughnut from this little shop, formerly The Nottingham Doughnut Co., located right in the heart of Notts. Their ‘Death by Choc’ doughnut is filled with gooey, chocolatey goodness that’ll make your tastebuds tremble – and that’s just a standard doughnut. Pay £1 more and you’ll be ordering from the premium menu, choosing from weird and wonderful boggers like the ‘Keep Poppin’, which may or may not contain popcorn. It might sound ridiculous, but it’s pure gastronomic genius.
It’s all in the name. This dessert lounge on Angel Row always provides the sweetest, most scrumptious treats and you can basically order whatever you fancy for a decent price. Their menu is about twenty pages long, so you’re bound to find exactly what you’re looking for, and if not, you can just design your own pud. First thing’s first, choose your base – a stack of pancakes, a waffle or a crepe – and then unleash the beast, choosing whatever toppings you like. You’ve got the decision of the standard milk, dark and white chocolates as well as different sprinkles, ice creams, nuts and loads of fruit if you want to make yourself feel better by adding a somewhat healthy twist to your dessert.
The Pudding Pantry
A top dog on the Nottingham pancake scene – with loads of toppings to choose from, including peanut butter, salted caramel, maple syrup and, of course, bacon, to accompany the fluffiest, most cloud-like pancakes I’ve ever had. You can’t go wrong. And it’s not only pancakes they’re good at. They do loads of other puddings – cakes, traybakes, cookies, and a new type of cheesecake special everyday. Their gourmet hot chocolates are also not to be missed, delectably creamy and topped with what looks like half a can of whipped cream.
With goods handmade onsite, this newly opened gelateria is serving up ice cream made in the Italian style known as gelato. A lower fat content and a slower churn produces luxurious, plumes of loveliness, less aerated than ice cream, so more flavour in your cone. Sundaes and waffles are also available if you’re looking for the full-on experience. Or just take a couple of scoops in a tub and go frolic in the Market Square fountain, like you just don’t care.
If you’re in need of a place to chill, get down to the small independent cafe just off Market Square that has the perfect laid-back vibe – Homemade. Here you’ll find a shedload of hearty homemade cakes that’ll leave any consumer with that warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Not the biggest cake fan? Not to worry, you can get stacks of fluffy pancakes, pies, tarts and sarnies instead. When you’re there, don’t forget to give one of their milkshakes a try – you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re near Forest Rec, definitely check out their little cafe up them ways.
The Beeston Brownie Company
You can’t get a better brownie anywhere else. These guys know what they’re doing. Their cubes of delight have that perfect balance of soft, crunching crust and gooey, warm center that any dessert obsessor craves. With over ten types to choose from, there’s always something new to try. With brownie stockists dotted all around Notts, you’ll never be too far from pure, unadulterated happiness – look out for them in The Ugly Bread Bakery and Toast Deli.
Get yersen down to this dessert house to find the longest ice cream sundae menu you’ll ever see in your life. They’ve got over twenty sundaes to choose from. And if you’re not an ice cream fan, never fear – the waffles, crepes, cakes and pudding menus are just as long, if not longer. My personal favourite has got to be the Strawberry Indulge Crepe – a freshly baked crepe with slices of fresh strawberry, strawberry syrup, milk chocolate and milk chocolate flakes on top. To. Die. For. Oh, and the portions are massive so you definitely won’t be leaving hungry. If anything, you’ll be walking out at half the speed you walked in with.
The Treat Kitchen
Here is where you’ll find a load of top notch sweet treats all hidden under the same roof. They sell over 25 flavours of gourmet jelly beans and loads of the traditional boiled sweets that take everyone straight back to the good ol’ days. The exquisite fudge they sell is all handmade in the on-site kitchen of their Notts-based shop, so it’s the freshest you’ll ever get and the taste proves it. On top of all of that, they even have stuff to cover vegan and other dietary requirements. Dead good.
This cosy cafe has a load of cakes on offer every single day. I’m talking chocolate sponges, vanilla sponges, carrot cake, fruit cake, coconut cake, cheesecake – the list goes on. The expert team at Devine Cakes only use the freshest, tastiest ingredients and they ignore all of that ‘added preservatives rubbish so their cakes are actually a healthier option than most. And they taste incredible, too. You can even make a meal out of it. Get your hands on some home cooked lunches while you’re there.
A little ice-cream centric gaff in Sneinton. We were charmed with their Ferrero Rocher waffle, and a bubblegum sundae, but there’s also crepes, milkshakes and gelato, all coming in a basquillion different flavours. There are some nice red seats in there too – easy-wipe, of course – but if you’d rather make a mess at home, you’re in luck because the boggers deliver. Unbuckle yersen and get ready.
