Meat Wave live at JT Soar

Meat Wave played live at JT Soar

It maybe Mating Calls' first show, but it only shows in the brevity of their set. It doesn’t matter though as it suits their style; a three-piece with snappy jolts of electric guitar and songs that are firmly plugged in to the 90s emo scene. It’s fun and lively set that lifts any sagging late-evening energy levels. They’re so new they don’t exist online yet, but if you see their name on a gig poster get yourself along pronto.

They may have only released their debut album in April of this year but Grey Hairs are already thinking about their next one, with tonight’s set made up of new loads of new tunes. Don’t worry though, they’ve not grown beards, thrown on a comfy cardy and come armed wielding banjos – they are still determined to make a noisy racket underpinned by a heavy grind. This is grizzly garage rock that won’t stop until it shakes, rattles and rolls our collective ear drums. There are cheeky nods to T-Rex via Oasis, fuzzy surf rock riffs, clever bits involving two guitars and a load of feedback, and they end with James laying pipe on bass while Amy takes over vocal duties. Wonderfully loud and never dull.

Meat Wave are currently over in the UK from Chicago and they carry on tonight’s tradition of blazing guitars making a tuneful racket. They’ve obviously gorged on a diet on 80s and 90s American alternative rock. Although the ears have taken a battering by this point, through the fuzz and powering vocals come bits of post-punk, the rush of Dinosaur Jr and Husker Du, and a whole heap of nervy, punky energy. It’s good stuff and a packed JT Soar appear to be feeling it too.

Meat Wave, Grey Hairs, and Mating Calls were at JT Soar on Saturday 28 November 2015.
