Crosswords is an idiosyncratic little spoken word open mic night, that takes place in the caves underneath the Malt Cross Pub on St James’ Street. There are plenty of open mic slots and a featured poet every month! In September our featured performer is the excellent Stephen Thomas!
Stephen is a performance poet and rapper from Loughborough. He's performed at poetry nights and festivals across the UK, and he's one of the main hosts of the fantastic Poetry is Dead Good in Nottingham. Stephen writes about relationships, identity and general sillness, and his poetry is fast, funny and thought-provoking. He also devised and created Poetercize - the Poetry Gameshow that's a cross between a poetry slam and Pat Sharp's Funhouse circa 1992! Stephen's first collection, Alphabet Spaghetti, was published in May 2017 by Big White Shed - and if you're good, he'll bring some copies with him to Crosswords!
Arrive at the caves from 7:30pm on the night to book your short open mic slot. The show starts at 8pm. We like poetry, prose, storytelling, a cappella singing, and monologues! Or you can just come along to listen – everyone's welcome! Entry is £2 per person and refreshments are available.
NB: there are over forty steps down to the caves, some of which are uneven and steep.
