A new display of objects from Welbeck’s historic Portland Collection of fine and decorative art built up by the Dukes of Portland and their families who have been at the country estate since 1607.
The display includes a wide variety of works from the internationally significant collection, from grand full-length oil painted portraits to tiny miniatures, furniture to jewellery, books to ceramics.
The new display features astonishing portraits of three forward-thinking females who transcended their gender and their class – including history’s earliest sci-fi writer – Margaret Lucas.
The free admission museum, situated within the country estate on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border, gives visitors the chance to see world-class art within an unusual location and delve into the history of one of the Midland’s ancestral country estates.
The Portland Collection is open daily, 11am and 4pm.
