Steffani Jemison and Justin Hicks present a new performance, commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary.
Mikrokosmos is an ongoing collaborative project that considers listening, language, and learning through contemporary Black American music. Using the solfège system (do re mi…), the work dismantles the lyrics of Gil Scott-Heron’s song We Almost Lost Detroit syllable per syllable; recomposing the piece into an hour-long piece of music. This technique loses the original meaning of the lyrics while emphasising the formal invention contained within the song.
This iteration of Mikrokosmos has been produced in collaboration with the Western Front, Vancouver.
