In The Virtuoso Composer, classical guitarist and composer, Simon Thacker, tells the story of the evolution of the solo performer-composer through some of the guitar’s most brilliant leading lights, from the early 19th century to the present day.
Described as “one of the most important musicians of his generation” (ThreeWeeks), Simon is a composer, classical guitarist and ensemble leader whose musical world draws on a deep immersion in diverse cultures. As well as touring as a classical guitar soloist, he’s developed and composed for some of today’s most vibrant ensembles. Svara-Kanti, a world leading Indo-Western collective, has seen him tour major festivals in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, including for an audience of 60 000 in Dhaka.
He is also the creative force behind Ritmata, his musical laboratory with three of Europe’s leading improvisers; Karmana, with Polish cellist Justyna Jablonska, a new vision for chamber music; and Songs of the Roma with Justyna and Roma Gypsy singer/violinist Masha Natanson. His music has been played on radio in over 50 countries.
