We Dig the Castle 2017 - Nottingham Castle's annual training excavation

At Nottingham Castle

Description

We Dig the Castle - Nottingham Castle's annual training excavation

Fancy learning archaeology hands-on, excavating in the outer bailey of the medieval Nottingham Castle? Our training excavation uncovers new information about the castle site while offering people of all backgrounds the opportunity to get involved in archaeology.

Through close tutor support and carefully designed hands-on workshops all trainees will be excavating within an hour - including absolute beginners!

We Dig the Castle is for people with all levels of skill, experience and existing knowledge, whether you have or are working towards a qualification in archaeology, are a Time Team fan, or just want to try something new.

With our timetabled day of induction, skills tutorials, task-based workshops, and excavation, trainees will see how their skills have developed. A changing daily programme allows trainees attending for 2 days or more to develop and practice skills in a variety of areas, and those coming for a taster to select the days most suited to their interests. You'll be able to gain skills in areas including excavation techniques, site recording, survey and laser scanning, post-ex, processing artefacts and managing environmental samples (see more information at www.tparchaeology.co.uk/dig-the-castle.htm).

Book the length of training and dates that suit you - we offer from 1 or 2 day taster sessions right up to 1-5 week placements. Weeks can also be divided, to work around your commitments.

Weekdays, 9.30-4.30pm, with a special Saturday training session on 5 August.

Ages 14-plus (under-16s with an adult).

Special reductions for ages 14-17, students, return trainees, and people who have volunteered at any time with Trent & Peak Archaeology on community projects.

Other activities:

Our We Dig the Castle family day on Sunday 23 July allows families of all ages to get involved in digging, washing finds and sieving at this real life archaeological dig at the world-famous Nottingham Castle. Watch out for more information and booking (advance booking required).

Pre-booked visits to the excavation are also available for groups of all kinds (no digging required!). Join a We Dig the Castle archaeologist for an archaeology tour of the Castle site. Hear about recent excavations and discoveries, watch the dig underway, and see the finds uncovered so far. For groups of all types and ages. Available between 17 July and 18 August (weekday daytimes).

Why not book a We Dig the Castle archaeologist to visit your group? We offer talks on a variety of archaeological subjects related to Nottingham Castle and its site, and will bring finds from the We Dig the Castle excavations. Available weekday daytimes and evenings, and some weekends (subject to availability), year round.
