For this years upcoming summer solstice you can expect the Sherwood suburb of Notts to resemble something of a ghost town as the residents and business owners unite in force for the Sherwood Festival.

Taking place in Woodthorpe park, a little further up the Mansfield road strip than the areas main hub, the festival aims to recognise the skills and talents of the local community by putting on a day of celebration that can appeal across the age spectrum.

Starting at 12 noon with a procession in the park, there will be a host of arts and craft stalls offering everything from locally handmade textiles to funky baby clothes and accessories, as well as a fair-trade stall offering tasting tests.

Expect Pottery workshops, tap dancing, belly dancing, martial arts demonstrations and plenty to keep the kids entertained via face painting, bouncy castles, trampolines, football matches and even a climbing wall.

To quench the thirst and tickle the tastebuds, local connoisseurs Ripple and MM deli will be providing a host of culinary delights and expect Tom Cruise style action in the beer tent with cocktail making shenanigans.

Providing the education for the day will be Sherwood Library who will be displaying information and imagery about the history of the area culminating in a quiz to test your local knowledge.

There will be a range of music to suit all tastes ranging from childrens bands through to Rock and Jazz (an X-factor style competition will be running throughout the day for those brave enough to take to the mic) and during the evening local bands will dominate the stage to keep the party going.

Whether you are a resident of the Sherwood area or not the day promises a down to earth festival atmosphere alongside a seriously refreshing dose of community spirit. Check it out and all for free!

Sherwood Festival takes place Saturday 21st June at Woodthorpe Park, Sherwood. 12 – 8pm. Free entrance.
