Scribal Gathering at the Hockley Hustle

17 October 10 words: James Walker
Saturday afternoon - Jon McGregor, Graham Joyce, Maria Allen, Lord Biro, Alex Davis, Damian Walter, Darius Hinks and more
Scribal Gathering at Cafe Bar Contemporary

Now in its fifth year, the Hockley Hustle is one of the pinnacles of the Notts calendar, and LeftLion has represented big style every time. This year, the event has expanded from one day to three, and LL take over Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday 23 October in a huge all-dayer. The evening session is a full-on music splurge (full details here), but the day session sees the return of Scribal Gathering, LeftLion's celebration of local writing, spoken word, and all things literature.

Hosted by James Walker and Aly Stoneman, Scribal Gathering draws together a huge range of local writers - here's the line-up...

3pm – 4.10pm

  • Staple 24 - 12 artists and 12 writers collaborated to produce this forthcoming title from Staple - some of whom will discuss and read from their interpretive work.
  • Literature Room 101 - Maria Allen reads from her debut novel whilst nominating five aspects of the writing industry she’d happily see the back of. That of course depends on the audience showing compassion.
  • Open mic: An opportunity to read a couple of poems. Places are limited so please sign up with Aly Stoneman.
 4.30 – 6.10pm
  • Final Fantasy: Alt Fiction’s Alex Davis chats with Damien Walter, Darius Hinks and Neil Roberts about that most visual of writing forms - the graphic novel, fantasy and science-fiction genres.
  • Elvis wouldn’t be seen dead in Tesco: Poet and artist Lord Biro shares his thoughts on contemporary culture with Al Needham and James Walker. Think Question Time, but with guests who actually care about their community.
  • Poetry Bingo: An opportunity to win free books.
6.30 – 7.30pm
Scribal Gathering is completely FREE, but we will be armed with collection buckets, and will not be tolerating minginess in any shape or form. The money raised will be split between Roads to Recovery, Inspire Nottingham, Framework Housing Association, Notts Refugee Forum and Nottinghamshire Hospice.

Scribal Gathering, Cafe.Bar.Contemporary, Nottingham Contemporary, Weekday Cross, 3 - 8pm. Free Entry.

We have a favour to ask…

LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
