Autism is a developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, with around 700,000 people suffering from it in the UK. Autistic people can require constant assistance and support, and for some families or carers, this may be too much to handle.

Organisations such as Autism East Midlands are specially designed to alleviate workload. Every year, they provide tens of thousands of hours of highly-specialized support to families affected by autism. They provide individually-tailored support, education and training which enables people with autism to live independent and fulfilling lives.

Autism East Midlands was originally founded in 1968 by a group of parents in Nottingham who were concerned that their children were not getting a suitable education.

Within the space of 50 years the organisation have grown to be the largest specialist autism charity in the East Midlands, providing services for both adults and children, and improving the quality of life for thousands of families. They have developed a specific ideology based on a deep and specific understanding of autism.

As the organisation celebrates their fiftieth birthday, Jane Howson, CEO of Autism East Midlands Autism East Midlands said: “This is an exciting year for Autism East Midlands as we are celebrating 50 years in supporting people on the Autism Spectrum. We are celebrating in many ways this year, trying to encourage everyone who has an association with the organisation, from our students and service users, staff, supporters and local businesses to be involved”.

Throughout the year, Autism East Midlands will be holding a number of activities to celebrate the landmark, such as a 50th Anniversary Ball, a fundraising 5K ‘retro’ run and a showcase of artwork created by their service users and staff.

Happy Birthday, and keep up the good work.

The Retro Run takes place on Sunday 4 March at Kelham Hall, Newark. The full rundown of events, plus more information about their services, can be found on their website and across their social media channels.
