A leader is someone who’s courageous, who has a clear vision, and has interpersonal skills that allow them to communicate effectively to achieve key objectives. But these sorta skills just don’t pop out of the blue, they must be developed. The Renewal Trust are offering the perfect opportunity to do so...

The Future Leaders of Nottingham 2018 programme is being run by The Renewal Trust, in partnership with many of Nottingham’s leading organisations, including Nottingham City Council, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and more. It’s a great opportunity to hone in on your inner Julius Caesar or MLK, through masterclasses, mentoring and coaching.

Now in its second year, the programme aims to discover people with genuine leadership potential and help them develop this skill, so you don’t necessarily have to be in a senior or managerial position at work to apply. Instead, you’ll need to show leadership qualities like authenticity, ambition, integrity and pragmatism.

The Renewal Trust has put a strong emphasis on involving underrepresented groups such as black and Asian ethnic communities and the LGBT communities. A recent survey found that over half of LGBT employees hide their sexual orientation or gender identity, because they think they won’t be considered for promotion or development opportunities.

Cherry Underwood, Chief Executive at The Renewal Trust said: “By creating a stronger, more representative group of leaders across Nottingham’s private, public and voluntary sectors, who have grown by working and collaborating with each other, we’ll help to enhance Nottingham’s standing as an influential 21st century city in the UK.” Essentially The Renewal Trust aim to make leadership in the city more diverse and representative of all communities, by discovering and developing future leaders from all walks of life.

Those who have previously been involved with the programme had nothing but positive words to say about their experience. Zabina Kauser, a Tenancy Sustainment Officer at Nottingham City Homes, who completed the programme in 2017, said: “Taking part in the Future Leaders programme has been a great experience for me, it has really inspired me, given me great confidence and empowered me to take risks. And it’s been a fantastic opportunity to meet and work with some very talented individuals.”

In addition, The Future Leaders of Nottingham is a fantastic opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals, add instantly recognisable names onto your CV, and to gain transferable leadership skills that can be applied in all job sectors. Get on it.
