We take a peek at some of the films on offer throughout March during Broadway Cinema's Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme

The Japan Foundation's annual touring film programme is landing in Nottingham, and throughout March you can catch eight great films at Broadway Cinema.  From animation, to comedy, musicals, classic cinema and historical epics, the programme has got something to please everyone, kicking off with Oh, Lucy! on Friday March 16th...

Oh, Lucy! (2017)

Friday 16th March, 8.30pm - with English Subtitles

Director: Atsuko Hirayanagi

Starring: Shinobu Terajima, Josh Hartnett, Kaho Minami

Running time: 95 min

Setsuko, an emotionally unfulfilled woman living in Tokyo is convinced by her niece to enrol in an unorthodox 'English' class. Grasping the opportunity to escape her drab life, she dons a blonde wig and takes on an American alter-ego, Lucy.

Starring: Tomoya Nagase, Yuri Chinen, Mamoru Miyano

Running time: 103 min

After agreeing to accompany a young boy and his dog to a Buddhist temple, an enigmatic swordsman becomes caught up in a struggle between morality, righteousness and devotion.

Running time: 125 min

A ruthless warlord named Nobunaga Oda is destroying everyone who stands in his way, that is until he reaches the Iga Province, home to the renowned ninjas.

Sing My Life (2016)

Sunday 18th March, 2.30pm - with English Subtitles

Director: Nobuo Mizuta

Starring: Mitsuko Baishô, Hiro Honda, Katsuko Kanai

Running time: 125 min

 

Katsu, a dissatisfied, sardonic woman in her 70s finds herself transported into the life of a 20 year old girl after visiting a photography studio.  Seizing the opportunity to make up for missing out on following the dreams of her youth, she starts a career as a singer, taking every opportunity to be a better, happier person.

Joy of Man's Desiring (2014)

Director: Masakazu Sugita

Starring: Ayane Ohmori, Nahoko Yoshimoto, Kôichirô Nishi

Running time: 85 min

After a huge earthquake strikes Japan, young siblings Haruna and Shota are left orphaned and homeless. Traumatised by witnessing her parents’ death, Haruna begins to realise that not even a new house and family can fill the void left by their loss, as she avoids telling her younger brother the truth of what happened.

The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (2013)

Tuesday 20th March, 6pm - with English Subtitles

Director: Takashi Miike

Starring: Tôma Ikuta, Risa Naka, Ken'ichi Endô

Running time: 130 min

Legendary director Takashi Miike's film is the story of Reiji Kikukawa, a police officer who scrapes through the academy with the lowest ever score.  Spotting his potential, the Chief of Police publicly fires Kikukawa, in order for him to become a mole in the Sukiya-kai, a ruthless yakuza gang.

Wednesday 21st March, 6pm - with English Subtitles

Director: Yuzo Kawashima

Starring: Furankî Sakai, Nobuko Otowa, Ikio Sawamura

Running time: 112 min

When potter Yumiko Tsuyama enters an old mansion overlooking Osaka enquiring about a room to rent, she discovers a bizarre collection of characters living within, including a low-level gangster and underwear-thief, an old army sergeant and cabbage roll specialist, and a female illegal liquor vendor. The leader of the menagerie is Yoda Goro, an eccentric man whose simplicity and naivety leave him susceptible to unscrupulous manipulators.

Starring: Paolo Andrea Di Pietro, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Toyotaka Hanazawa

Running time: 125 min

A former serial killer who has Alzheimer's disease must protect his beloved daughter from her psychotic boyfriend.
